The contribution of Jain art to the main stream of art in India has been considerable. Every phase of Indian art is represented by a Jain version and each one of them is worthy of meticulous study and understanding.
This volume covers peninsular India, the South and Deccan, including the present states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and a fringe of Maharashtra. This superb volume with over 500 full colour and monochrome plates with an introduction that rapidly surveys the historical background, the architectural features, the sculptural nuances, the delicacies of colour and form in paintings both murals and precious illustrated palm-leaf manuscripts, masterpieces of the metal craftsman's work, delicate wooden carving and so forth, proceeds from the earliest Pallava and early Western Chalukya, Pandya, Chera, Western Ganga, Nolamba, Rashtrakuta, Eastern Chalukya, later Western Chalukya, Hoysala, Kakatiya, Vijayanagara and Nayak to narrate an absorbing story of a panorama of south Indian art with chosen examples visually illustrating the delicacy of form, movement, colour and technique. Planned to be released close to the millennium year of the famous monolith sculpture of Bahubali at Sravanabelagola in Karnataka, it adequately sings the glory of Jain art in this region. |
