DESCRIPTION
An attempt has been made to provide an in-depth study of 1.2 billion Muslims of the World—who distinguishes them from each other and where they are, and how they live. It seeks to discover what they have in common, what they feel about themselves. Here, we have identified 750 Muslims tribes, castes and communities of the world and compiled in alphabetical order. Among them, 246 Muslim groups are Indian. Besides them, there are some other groups who have undergone changes of their identity altogether. As the entries of this study show that Muslims have much in common, they share an universal trans-ethnic religion— Islam. They worship the same God, recognize more or less the same religious laws, observe many of the same rituals and share distinguishable culture traits derived from their Islamic heritage. Today, Muslims of the world speak dozens of languages and exhibit many cultures through 300 or so ethnic groups which they belong. We have identified nine cultural areas in which most of the Muslims live—The drylands of South-west Asia; the lower Nile River Delta; the Mediterranean Coast of North Africa; the Arabs; the North-east Ethiopia; the East African coast; the Central Asia; the Great Aryan Land; and South-east Asia. This Encyclopaedia emphasizes patterns of living rather than an analysis of Islam. But from the evidence presented here does not appear to be a trend away from religion. This survey of the Muslim world is designed primarily for the English-speaking academician or layman.
