Dissolution of colonies and emergence of independent states generated new debates and brought about a change in the concerns of the people of the former colonies. Therefore, it is felt that a marked shift has occurred in the representation of India in European discourses in the contemporary period.
Articles included in the volume Encountering the Indian are drawn from different disciplines and offer a rereading of those cultural texts which emerged during or after India's struggle for freedom. Varied experiences and views expressed in this volume are bound in common frame of reference. However, the European images of India presented here seem to be anamorphic and unstable. |
