DESCRIPTION
This volume is a descriptive study of Ladakh (Leh district) through its language. This detailed and penetrating contemporary study of the region, its environment, agrarian and pastoral life, and associated customs and rituals, flora and fauna and terrain, with perspectives on history and development is the first of its kind. It is a modest attempt to narrate how Ladakhi perceive their surroundings and utilize them, how agricultural work is undertaken, how the Ladakhi obtain water for their daily needs even when celebrated rivers like Sindhu, Zangs-kar, Sha-yok fail to provide it. Ladakhi observe their surroundings minutely and name them accordingly to their location, colour, size, and the value they represent, using them as landmarks while herding livestock to the mountains and when some of them go astray.
