Watershed management is an approach of area planning of natural resources, specially, land, water and plants for the socio-economic need of human society and community concerned. It provides a systematic way for integrated development in any given area. It involve the exploration and develop-ment of the complex interrelationship between the resources of watershed and the people of the area. In the fragile Indian hot arid ecosystem the degradation of environment is basically attributed-to low and erratic rainfall, hostile climatic condition and increasing biotic pressure in the nee of adequate investment and appropriate management practices to augment and conserve the natural resources.
About the Author :
Dr. M. A. Khan is a Principal Scientist (Soil & Water Conservation Engineering) in C.A.Z.R.I., Jodhpur. He did his B.Sc. (Agrl.) Engineering from University of Allahabad, M.E. (Civil) Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering, and Ph. D. (Civil Engineering) from J. N. Vyas University, Jodhpur with brilliant academic record. Dr. Khan started his career in 1971 as Assistant Professor (Agril. Engineering) with Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University, Jabalpur. He joined I.C.A.R. in April 1979 as Scientist S-2 (Soil & Water Cons. Engg.) in CAZRI, Jodhpur. In October 1979 he was deputed as an Expert to work with Africa's most prestigious irrigation project, Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority, Government of Nigeria and worked upto April 1986. He received advance training in Application of Remote Sensing and GIS in Water Resources Engineering at National Institute of Environmental Studies, Tsukuba, Japan. He has worked as Head, Division of Natural Resources and Environment in CAZRI, Jodhpur. Dr. Khan has specialized in the field of hydrology, water resources engineering and watershed management. He is Project Coordinator, Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission, Government of India. He has developed improved design of rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge technologies for improving water supplies and stabilizing productivity in rainfed areas. He has worked as District Coordinator in DDP/TOT programme of watershed management. Dr. Khan has published more than 130 research papers in International and National Journals of repute, book chapters, bulletin and books. He has participated and presented research papers in several seminars/ symposia/ conferences/workshops. He is a member of several International and National Professional Societies and Research Advisory Councils. |
