DESCRIPTION
This major work is a commentary on Sabara's Bhasya, which is itself another commentary on the Purvamimamsa Sutras of Jaimini. The Purva Mimamsa is one of the six orthodox systems of Hindu philosophy. "Purva Mimamsa stresses study of the Vedas [Hindu sacred texts] as the source of instruction for human beings, an emphasis which led them to develop sophisticated theories of language and methods for textual interpretation," writes Associate Professor James G Lichtefeld. The Purva Mimamsa sets forth rules for interpreting the Vedas, which are seen as providing injunctions to ritual action. The ritual action if properly performed maintains the harmony of the world and advances the performer along his spiritual path. Jaimini (2nd century BC) founded Purva Mimamsa with his magnum opus, Purvamimamsa Sutras. The Bhasya, a major commentary on the latter was written by Sabara (1st century BC) and in turn a great interpretation of the Bhasya was written by the great thinker and exponent of the Purva Mimamsa system, Kumarila Bhatta (7th century AD). This was the Tantravarttika.
