Under the heroic leadership of Ranee Lakshmi Bai, Jhansi and Bundelkhand played an extremely important role in India’s War of Independence in 1857. Her Martyrdom placed not only Jhansi but the entire Bundelkhand region into a place of pride in our history. Much has been written on Ranee Lakshmi Bai, but no attempt has been made so far towards a systematic and chronological compilation and publication of the documents relating to that period preserved in the National Archives, New Delhi, Regional Archives, Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh State Archives, Bhopal and with the princely families of Bundelkhand.
The present volume is an attempt in that direction and will add immensely to our knowledge of Bundelkhand, particularly on Jhansi and the battle that ensued between Ranee Lakshmi Bai and the British. These documents throw light on the rebellious activities of not only Ranee Lakshmi Bai and her army commanders, but also present a descriptive account of their activities during the revolt, causes of rebels defeat, and the downfall of the Jhansi state. |
