The Prakatarthavivarana is an old commentary on the Brahmasutrabhasya of Sri Sankara, by an eminent scholar - presumably a Samnyasin who exact name has not so far been ascertained and who is quoted by writers like Sri Appayya Diksita under the descriptive appellations - Prakatarthakarah and Prakatarthavivaranakarah. The Prakatarthavivarana hold an important place in the history of the commentaries on the Bhasya of Sankara. Though not the first-for the oldest commentary is the Bhamati of Vacaspatimisra-the Prakatarthavivarana is the first complete commentary on the Bhasya, written from the point of view of Padmapada and Prakasatman.
