The Chakmas are one of the less known tribal people living in the Northeastern part of India. They are hard working people living mostly in the rural areas. They mainly practice Jhumming or shifting cultivation in Mizoram. Most of the Chakmas lives in villages.
Culture includes religion its rituals and festivals dresses ornaments, literatures arts, music etc. As culture flourishes, it adds in its fold various elements from its neighbours consciously or unconsciously. The incorporation of alien elements in the day to day life is bound to have an effect.
The Chakmas believe that the history of their origin is connected with the mountainous Kingdom of Kalap Nagar in the Himalayan ranges which is likely to be a part of the present Nepal. There was a Sakya dynasty, in which the great sage Gautama Buddha was born, in North Arakan long before the birth of Gautam Buddha. |
