Violence and Crimes against women has been a world wide epidemic. Crime against women is a common evil in Indian Society and has deeply rooted traditionally in Indian culture. Crimes have been classified under Indian Penal Code as Rape, Kidnapping and Abduction, Homicide for Dowry and Dowry deaths, Torture, molestation, sexual harassment and importation of girls. In India various gender specific laws have been enacted as Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, and Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987. It may be specifically stated that cases of crimes and violence against women are increasing daily, eg. In 2005, total crimes were 18, 22, 602 whereas 1, 43, 523 were against women, in 2009, total crimes reported were 21, 21, 345 whereas, 2, 03, 804 were against women. Andhra Pradesh tops the list by recording 25569 (12.5%) in India. |
