This book is the first attempt since 1949, when Giuseppe Tucci published his monumental opus on Tibetan painting, to present a lucid and concise analysis of the styles and aesthetics of Tibetan thankas. Most books on Tibetan art are devoted largely to iconography, but in this volume the author has written a history of various styles of the thankas that prevailed in Tibet between the 11th and the 19th centuries. The interest of this book lies also in the fact that the author has placed particular emphasis on the earlier styles which flourished between the 11th and the 15th centuries. |
