Drukpa school was founded by Ling raspa during 12th century A.D. His disciple Tsang pa Gyeraspa founded two monasteries viz. Ralung and Druk. Thereafter, Padma Karpo protected and promoted this tradition. In 1952 he got Parinirvana. Paksam Wangpo, his incarnation, became the head of Ralung monastery in Tibet, Zab Drung Nawang Namgyal who is considered his second incarnation moved to Bhutan and developed Drukpa tadition there, his school later popularly known Lho Druk Kagyud Tradition. He sent his representative Chosje Mugzin to Ladakh in 1588 and he first stayed at Mut village established a small temple there, thereafter he came Stagna. In 1590 established a small Gonpa at the gap of Stagna hillock. Later with the kind support of Ladakh king Senge Namgyal he shifted to the top of the mountain and established Gonkhang in 1618. Thus Stagna monastery finally established near Leh. Today it is a famous Lho-Druk monastery in Ladakh. It has many branch gonpas in Zanskar, Paldar and Lahul valley of Himachal Pradesh. |
