This publication presents a set of sample registration system based abridged life tables, constructed using Schoen (1978) method, for India and its major states, for rural, urban and total (rural plus urban) areas, by male, female and both the sexes combined, for seven successive time periods of 1970-75, 1976-80, 1981-85, 1986-1990, 1991-95, 1996-2000, 2001-2005 and the latest period of 2002-2006.
This study, mainly aims at providing an easy access to the life tables of India and its states to all those in need. These life tables are also observed to be: (1) free from the typographical errors, (2) uses the same set of formulae in the life table construction irrespective of whether it is for males, females or both sexes combined, (3) quite comparable with that of the life tables produced by the Office of the Registrar General, India that uses Greville (1943) method.
This database, which consists of 1224 life tables in total of 17 major states and India as a whole, will be of immense use for cross-sectional and time series analysis of mortality and for other purposes.
This book in addition presents: (1) a set of regression models for estimating life expectancy at birth, (2) regression estimates of life expectancy at birth by sex and residence for each of the major state and India for each of the year starting from 1970 to 2006.
This data base/source book will be of great use for demographers/population scientists, actuarial scientists, geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, statisticians and mathematicians, health scientists; for the students, researcher scholars as well as teachers; for governmental, non-governmental organizations, for health planners in India/abroad. Foreign scholars may also find the present source of immense use for its methodology and content. |
