In the Era of 21 century of Universal education and employment every body needs proper guidance and counselling for better adjustment in all walks of life. A large number of students are confused while deciding to choose their career due to pressure from parents, peer groups or friends. They also find themselves in the grip of indecent agencies or face other personal adjustment problems. The problem of adjustment has become quite complex for social scientist who have to turn their attention to understanding it. Feeling of insecurity, indecisiveness when opting for educational courses, low scholars achievement, choice of friends etc., create emotional tensions and anxieties. The students are always under stress. As a result the suicide rate among students is increasing day by day. The population migration from rural to urban society also faces many kinds of problems.
It is be kept mind that academic achievement of student basically depend upon their healthy adjustment in classroom, home, society and also proper choice of study. In other words their intelligence and emotion are inter-dependent. The other problem faced by our young students is in their choice of the right career. In this era on globalization thousands of new job opportunities arise every year. The question is who will help them in getting the right information and making right choices. Such information may be provided by schools and colleges by employing trained counselors for the specific purpose. Keeping this point in mind the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD). Government of India felt a need of Guidance workers and Counselors at schools, colleges and universities. It has been observed that there is a complete vacuum in the relevant literature in India to help and guide the professionals in initiating and conducting the guidance and counselling programme at various levels.
The present book has been written with three clear objectives (i) to enable learners to understand the real meaning of guidance and counselling (ii) To give the professionals all essential information, and iii To make the students, irrespective of their discipline, developed insight into guidance and counselling. It is hoped that the humble effort made in the form of this book will assist the professionals in the accomplishment of the understanding of the various concepts and methods applied in guidance and counselling. |
