The Maktubat (letters) are an important source on Saiyid Ali in particular and medieval Islam, in general. They not only reflect the author’s intense zeal for establishing religious laws but also his concern about the falling of moral values and degeneration of the contemporary society. They are, in fact, a critique of the spirit of the age. The letters also show that Saiyid "Ali" was a great missionary, sincerely devoted to the cause of religion with unshakeable faith in God. They also exhibit that he considered himself to be changed with Allah’s mission to bring one Muslim masses in general and the ruling class in particular to right path.The manuscript copies of the letters, generally called Maktubat-i-Mir Saiyid Ali Hamadani, are available in various libraries of the world, along with the English translation. The present annotated edition is based on six such manuscripts. The English translation of the letters along with a detailed analysis has been attempted for the first time in order to give the reader a fair knowledge of the teachings of Saiyid Ali.
