The present book, Women in Contemporary India, Realities and Perspectives, is a modest attempt at portraying the changing perceptions of the status and role of women in contemporary India. A country like India with a history spanning thousands of years, a multiplicity of languages, customs and cultural practices, an hierarchy in a patriarchal society based on caste, creed and class, and varieties of religious beliefs and sects, it is not easy to draw all these different threads together and weave them into a pattern. In this whole exercise, the author have attempted to present the whole picture on the journey of Indian women from traditional society to gender equality of contemporary globalised world.
The underlying theme of the present is, broadly focused on the status of women from the society of Vedas to contemporary India in the 21 century with multidimensional problems related to education, health, employment opportunities, participation, and violation of human rights, discrimination and violence, and the changes of their position. |
