DESCRIPTION
Achieving ecological sustainability and reducing poverty of forest dwellers are the two major challenges in developing countries, including India. Through an action-oriented research in Orissa, the book attempts to demonstrate how forest-based livelihoods can be enhanced sustainably. An innovative approach to collect information on available natural resources and the use-pattern by the communities in an integrated manner is discussed. The forests' contribution to the livelihood is 33 % (even though it forms only 20% of the land area). Another important component of the book relates to designing methodologies to assess the production-consumption balance of the forest resources, viz. how much of the produce is currently used and how much is still available on a sustainable basis. This is illustrated with the help of a detailed investigation of the consumption of fuelwood and Sal leaves for plate making industry, the two most dominant resource used by the local communities. The results indicate that the community resource use pattern is well within the carrying capacity of their surrounding forest ecosystems. The last part relates to establishment of community run Sal-leaf based enterprises to demonstrate how the potential of forests can be realized towards enhancing income and equitable sharing of benefits.
