In this lucidly written book, the author compares the dry farming agriculture as opposed to farming in irrigated areas in teh state of Maharashtra. The author concentrates on the rainfed farming regions of Maharashtra which constitute about 80 per cent of its cropped areas. The new technology has benefited only the wet and irrigated regions and the population living there. The rest of the areas and crops grown there have remained neglected. THis abvailable dry farming technology has not achieved results mainly due to limited experimental applications. The author also asks the question whether technology breakthrough alone is sufficient for the economic growth of dryland areas or whether non-farm activities also need to be promoted. In particular, he suggests the development of secondary and tertiary sectors and the strengthening of rural infrastructure.
