The book contains a comprehensive account of recent advances in the concept of forestry for the people and various other parameters to improve the quality of life for people through forestry related activities. This edited volume contains chapters on various facets of people oriented tree cultivation activities. Each chapter has been written by forest scientists and practicing foresters so as to take care of both theoretical and practical aspects. The book inter alia deals with enrichment and rehabilitation of degraded soil through planting of appropriate Nitrogen-Fixing Tree (NFTs) species and Multi-Purpose Tree (MPTs) species, soil and water conservation, technology of improving quality of soil in salt affected lands, environmental amelioration through tree planting in both urban and rural areas, biological reclamation of extensive mine-spoil area, rehabilitation of Jhum (shifting cultivation) related degraded lands and alternatives to Jhuming, managements of social forestry plantations including pests and didease management etc. Chapters have been written by authors who are acknowledged leaders in their specialised areas.
