DESCRIPTION
Micro finance continues its mass expansion in India. Banks and micro finance institutions have their spread and outreach; they have given access to financial services to the poor and women in particular, with their diversified services but empowerment is still an issue and a point of consideration. Are women still looked as mere clients or as leaders and managers of credit? The book investigates the outreach of microfinance to women and its impact on empowerment of women, involvement of SHG entrepreneurship and empowerment process. The book affirms the view that provision of financial services is not a ‘magic’ wand to empower women over night. Access to credit alone cannot empower a woman; gendered power relations within the household must be taken into account because it affects the distribution and user of cash resources. It women are not to be used as channels for men’s access and control over micro loans, other interventions such as improvement of their productive skills, forward and backward linkage facilities, ease of women’s access to market and technology and networking are required in addition to microfinance intervention.
