DESCRIPTION
This publication provides comprehensive information about networking from the lowest levels of data transmission and wiring to the highest level of application software. It successfully answers all questions from the area of computer networking and internet operation. After giving a brief explanation of how the underlying hardware works and discussing modulating a carrier, asynchronous, character-oriented data transmission, it defines terms such as bandwidth and baud. It introduces ten motivation for using packets, and then describes characteristics used to categorize networks as: LANs, local loops, WANs, public or private, connection oriented or connectionless, as well as basic network topologies and wiring schemes. Finally it includes a discussion of both general and specific applications by describing the client-server model that network application use, name resolution with the domain name system and application such as e-mail, file transfer, web browsing including an explanation of dynamic CGI documents and active Java and advanced Java documents. Network security and how application software can be used for network management is also being discussed. The book is useful for the students studying at several universities, colleges and institutions for B.C.A., M.C.A., BIT and other allied courses in computer science.
