The first world war gave birth to the league of nations, which could not survive for long. But league of Nations gave an idea to the Governments of the world that wars can be eliminated from the world and the world can be made a safer place for mankind to live.
The Second World War fought-between 1939 and 1945 gave birth to the united Nations organization, which later was renamed as United Nations. The theme of United Nations was that wars take place in the minds of men and to avoid wars, men's minds must be properly influenced.
The United Nations has a General Assembly which represents the whole world and governs the Security Council. The task of world peace rests with the Security Council, which looks after the work of world peace through its Secretary General. Five Members of the Security Council have veto powers. Before the end of cold war, the world was bipolar, U.S. on one side and the Soviet-Russia on the other side and there was always a tussle on world issues. But now with the collapse of the Soviet-Russia, American supremacy is prevailing.
However the United Nations has been successful in maintaining world peace to a considerable extent. |
