Certain neglected aspects of the agrarian unrest, upsurge and peasant's struggle against the highhandedness and misrule of the rulers and their bureaucrats in the East Punjab States have been brought to light. Their socio-economic status remained at state for a long time. So some issues likes the types of peasant's organisations, the detailed history of the various tenants/peasant's movements, their socio-economic base or the involvement of the different sections of the peasantry, the role of casteism and communalism, the ideological aspects and strategic perspective as well as the form of struggle in the Agrarian movements, the nature and the methods of mass mobilisation; finally their achievements and failures have been highlighted in this work.
The main objective of this study is to bring into focus the impact of internal and international development on peasants/tenant's struggles. The work also deals with the role played the states peasantry in the Anti Imperialist War of Liberation in the country. Also grievances and demands of agriculturist in the light of the economic background to the Agrarian movements characterising the Punjab States have been thoroughly investigated. A detailed account of their morchas; the approach and attitudes of various political parties towards the problems and movements of the peasants/tenants are discussed. Lastly, an authentic account of the mighty peasants' upsurge under the leadership of Kisan Sabha is given. Thus the study would prove useful for the researchers, teachers and students in India and also abroad. |
