India, with great diversity in climate, edaphic and physiographic factors, is endowed with a rich variety of flora and fauna. We have about 4800 species of plaints, among which about 800 plant species are known to have medicinal properties. Therefore, India is in an advantageous position to be a major global player in the growing trade in medicinal plants. However, all medicinal plants cannot be allowed for unregulated trade as many of these plants are now threatened due to unsustainable and destructive harvesting. |
