Distance education was begun with an eye on providing quality education in the rural and less developed or underdeveloped parts of the country. The basic purpose behind it is the promotion and extension, rather encouragement for imparting quality education in the least possible facilities. In areas, where the standard of education is very low, or the facilities of qualified faculty and standard study material are out of reach, Distance Education plays a pivotal role. Through this programmed, a person can study as well as run a business or take up some job. In this programmed, a student is not class-bound. Having applied for a course of study, he or she can complete all the formalities through mail. After registration, an enrolment number is allotted, for a reference to all further proceeding. Books and notes are provided by mail and the student is required to study them. He or she has to complete the assignment, attached with the study material at different intervals. These scores get accumulated and at the end of the term, a formal examination is held. For holding examinations and teacher student interaction, a list of study-centre is provided. The student has to choose a centre near his residence and can consult teacher in the face of nay difficulty or for appearing at the final examination. For the ease of students, holidays, Sundays and Saturdays (where Saturday is an off day) have been fixed for interaction. This type of education starts from the secondary standard and the boy which governs it, is called 'Open School' in general. Thus, through 'Open School' certificates of secondary and senior secondary education can be obtained. There is another institution, called IGNOU, which can be made use of after 10+2 from this non-campus university, higher education can be pursued in the same way as discussed above. Apart from IGNOU, there are several other open varsities in the country, which are serving the community, well.
