This book has given a fruitful knowledge about the travel in Kashmir, Tibet and Gilgit. Various circumstances took me to Kashmir, but for the greater part of a year I was travelling. In the course of my journey, I was luckly enabled to accompany my friend, Mr. Walter R. Lawrence, and Captain Bower, the ex-colonel Durand’s expediton against the raiding Hunza-Nagars.
The whole region included in the sketch-map which accompanies this volume is an intricate mass of mighty mountains cloven by immumberable ravines. I introduced much needed reforms, which will produce important results in the immediate future.“Kashmir has been called the norther bastion of India.” The three greatest Empires of the Earth meet-Great Britain, Russia and China. |
