The word basti includes both the kidneys as well as urinary bladder. The suppression of an urge to pass urine is described as an important tract. The classification of medical diseases of kidneys by Ayurveda is strikingly similar i.e. Acute nephritis (Pittaja kidney disease), Nephrotic syndrome (Kaphaja kidney disease), Chronic nephritis (Vataja kidney disease), Uraemia (Tridoshaja kidney disease). The causative factors of symptoms and management of these diseases are described in detail.
The causes and treatment of various types of Mutrakruchchra (dysuria), i.e. difficulty in passing urine and Mutraghata, i.e. various conditions like atomic bladder, maetal or urethral stricture, cancer of bladder neck which are associated with obstruction in the flow of urine are described in detail and their treatment is given.
Infections of urinary tract are called as Ushnavata and Putibasti in Ayurveda and their treatment is described.
