Women of all ages, communities and classes in general and slum in particular have been subjected to varying degrees of socio-economic discrimination and exploitation due to their low educatonal status. In a country like ours where education is a key contributor to the evolution and progress of people, the problem of illetracy specially among women is a bar to their development. Realising the magnitude of the problem of Literacy Campaigns of India have emerged in the 1990s as a societal response to the crises of mass illetracy. An effort is made in this to cosmopolitain city keeping the question in mind whether the efforts and activities made by the literacy volunteers and organisers have been able to influence the slum women in developing their level of literacy skills and awareness in various aspects of their life or not?
