The book is the first systematic study on the history of public library movement of Kerala. It examines the crucial role played by the Kerala Grandhasala Sanghom for the growth and development of library movement in the state. For the last seven decades the Sanghom served the people of Kerala as an informal educational institution providing educational, political, cultural and social enlightenment. The study attempts to throw adequate light on the history of library movement and its relevance in the socio-cultural milieu of Kerala. Moreover it seeks to evaluate the movement's socio-cultural contribution in the making of modern Kerala.
