DESCRIPTION
At present there is no detailed and fully documented history of the modern state of Jammu and Kashmir. The author proposes to fill up this gap by bringing out a series of volumes chroniclining the history from 1846 A.D., when the state was founded, to 1948 A.D. The first volume is in the hands of the readers. It deals with the circumstances leading to the establishment of the state. The picture of the early history of the state as it has emerged after using the material obtained from the two repositories as well as other sources, both published and unpublished, is much different from what has already been known. It is necessary to point out here that as the period covered by the present work was marked by revolutionary political changes, many rumours owing to apprehensions and other reasons were spread in the country. The author has taken notice of them only if they affected the course of history. He has also taken liberty to change the spellings of the names of persons and places appearing in the old records to the form used now.
