It was Haeckel who invented the world ecology, which means a study of animals and plants in their relationship to each other and to their environment. Ecological studies deals with the web of life that entangles every species with lives of others and each species with its non-living environment as a whole and each element or factor of that environment. Odum has preferred to define ecology as the study of the structure and function of nature.
