DESCRIPTION
In this landmark book for the Buddhist sacred arts, Konchog Lhadrepa, the principal of Sechan Monastery's Tsering Art school has painstakingly compiled many teachings from some of the great masters of Tibet, as well as drawing from his own experience of 35 years as a thangka painter under the instruction of H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, to create this manual for the sacred artist. In consideration of the fact that many people in this day and age are practicing sacred art without an adequate knowledge of the correct attitude and conduct with which to approach this practice, Konchog has included basic Buddhist teachings and practices, clearly pointing out the relevance of these for the sacred artist, along with a general history and iconography of Buddhist art.
In a graded approach to the subject matter, the book begins with some basic Buddhist teachings and history, and then specific Buddhist and Tibetan general and art history. In the next part of the book, the importance of devotion and compassion is stressed, along with an explanation on the relationship between visualization in vajrayana Buddhism and artistic practice. Iconography, drawing and various meditative, practical and ritual practices that the artist needs to know are explained in the latter part of the book, including broad subject matter such as temple building and so on. All of this is encompassed with the continual reminder that all the sacred art practice needs to be encompassed by the "three goods" of generating the altruistic motivation in the beginning, the main practice and the dedication of merit at the end. It is hoped that this artist's manual will be helpful for all Buddhist artists and those interested in the sacred Buddhist arts.
