DESCRIPTION
The beginnings of systematic historiography were made in the first decade of the nineteenth century when surveys were carried out in South India and subsequently in Assam, Bengal, and Bihar. The reports of the survey were presented in the second decade of the century and form the basis of most contemporary researches in India. The significance of methods and methodology in historiography have been stressed in the concepts and theories of several well-known scholars in the field. These provide valuable insights into the processes and procedures of historiography to students, scholars, historians and archaeologists. In the present publication an attempt has been made to bring together all these insights for the benefit of both students and researcher. The subject covered include: background and basic concepts; ancient, medieval and modern periods; fundamental theory and the various schools of thought of historiography. The schools of thought include Prussian, Subaltern, Ranke, Annales, and Michael Foucalt. The book will be of seminal interest and serve as what it sets out to be, a comprehensive introduction to the subject.
