Discrepant achievement has received wide research attention. Ever since its introduction as an operational construct in educational literature, this areas has emerged as a strong focus of research and diverse facets of discrepant achievement have been subjected to intense research scrutiny and critical analysis. Extent of concern for academic achievement clearly varies among students. There are some high achiever who lose few opportunities to call attention to their success and other high achievers who appear to treat success with indifference; some low achievers respond to failure with distress while other appear to fail with impunity. The process producing this variation is one instance of the general process through which activities become more or less consequential for the maintenance f self-concept and adjustment.
