DESCRIPTION
The social situation in which school children and teachers meet are in one sense, quite specific ones, they are created for the purpose of ensuring the education of the children. The effectiveness with which this particular process is going on is the standard by which we must judge the quality of the discipline are the relationships among the parties concerned. Therefore, if we are going to be able to distinguish the kinds of behaviour and attitudes on the part of pupils and teachers which constitute good or bad discipline, we must have a clear idea of the characteristics of the process of education. But if our notion of discipline is to be not only rational but also practically useful, our general concept must be thought of as it is embodied in concrete situations.
