DESCRIPTION
This book has primarily been written keeping in view the needs and interests of B.Sc. (Pass), B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. (Part I) students of Indian Universities. It has broadly been divided into three sections, viz. FUNDAMENTALS, CORE COURSE and SPECIAL TOPICS. Basic concepts have been introduced at an early stage so that their importance can be better appreciated when they are applied in the chapters that follow. The subject matter of the first four chapters has subsequently been applied in almost every chapter.
The chapter sequence in the Core Course (Chapters 5-22) has been planned bearing in mind that the reactivities of organic functional groups follow some general principles. Accordingly, the compounds have been arranged in the order of functional groups without making the traditional distinction between aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Spectral characteristics of almost all classes of compounds have been discussed. In addition, the mechanisms of most of the reactions have been discussed in a simple and lucid style.
The third section on Special Topics (Chapters 23-24) of the book contains a detailed account of the topics of current interest such as Synthetic Polymers, Organic Chemistry of Life, Organic Photochemistry and Pericyclic Reactions. About 1000 drill questions and problems are included in the book to provide sufficient breadth to appreciate the aim with which the book has been written. Solutions to Selected Problems are provided.
