In this Volume, writers drawn from various parts of the region-both hills and plains, notwithstanding limitation of the areas covered - have tried to address themselves to the hitherto neglected aspects of study. The purpose is to work towards the integration of the socio-economic, cultural and political history of each area under study so as to arrive at a better understanding of (a) uneven developments with in the region, and (b) how and why certain events and actions occurred during pre-British times. It is hoped that this effort will encourage further investigations into the intricacies of the peoples' contacts among themselves within the region and the region's interconnectedness with happenings in South Asia and beyond.
