National Interactive Meet on Scope and Opportunities in Research and Business of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (NIM - 2002), Organized during 17-18 May, 2002, by CIMAP was an effort to bring farmers, entrepreneurs, researchers, policy makers, and funding organizations at one forum to forge functional linkages, discuss present prospects and workout future strategies for the growth of MAPs sector. During the two days of extensive discussion and face-to-face interactions several gaps in the lab-to-land-to-market systems were identified and viable symbiotic/synergistic solutions to fill them were offered. The deliberations were held under the canopy of following six thematic areas:-
1. Potential and constraints in business, research and technology
2. Approaches for sustainability, utility generation, and improvement
3. Strategies for commercialization
4. New areas and leads for exploitation
5. Value addition, product development and quality control
6. Identification of linkages and catalysts of value chain
Steered through 13 lead lectures by eminent resource persons; 10 oral presentation; 70 poster contributions and; two panel sessions on "buyer-seller dialogue" and "agriculture to entrepreneurship", covering aspects ranging from agrotechnology development, biotechnology options, value addition and diversification of newer utility, quality control, banking financing, IPR issues, and farmer-centric policies for sustainable commercialization, NIM - 2002 was a welcome beginning of a sensitizing process for pooling individual knowledge into collective wisdom towards the upliftment of MAPs business and trade.
The proceedings of NIM - 2002 have now been complied in the form of this book. It is hoped that it will not only serve as a reference source for all those who are involved in cultivation, processing, trade, and research of MAPs, but will equally useful as an updated guide for policy-makers and financial institutions. |
