| This book represents the proceedings of a National Seminar held by Kashmir Education, Culture and Science Society on 8 November, 2003 on ecological and environmental issues of Kashmir. Environment protection and sustainable development are subjects of common concern world over. Kashmir's environment forms part of the Himalayan mountain range. Kashmir has an important place in the ecological system concerning India with its forests, water resources, cultural sites and monuments. The participants in seminar included eminent scholars from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Kashmir University, Jamia Millia, Hamdard University, Indian Law Institute, Ministry of Environment and Forest as also officers from Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board. It was an interdisciplinary seminar of scientists, economists, lawyers, bureaucrats, and historians. The participants reflected on the current trends in national and global environment movement. The role of modern science for sustainable development has been highlighted. New science will help to make a prosperous Kashmir. People in Kashmir are looking forward to developing a beautiful valley and a creative scientific society. They want to promote harmony with nature, and a multi-cultural society as was the dream of poets of Kashmir, Mehjoor and Zinda Kaul, and saints and sages like Lal Ded and Nund Rishi. Kashmiris see a new hope of progress in the new environmental science. The book also has some analysis on the environmental issues of modern world. New science philosophy can be combined with eastern ideas as has been suggested by scientists like Prigogine, Hawking and Enstein. The environment movement therefore makes for a new dialogue with nature, a new unity of science, and world peace. The book should be of interest in India and abroad, to specialists in environmental sciences, as also to the general public. Hon'ble President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has also in his new year message of 2004 inspired all creative people to make India a developed nation by the help of new sciences, and economics of sustainable development. |
