The book is a detailed study of the Shan race - their early settlement in China many centuries ago; their migration to neighbouring countries, i.e. Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Assam in India, etc.; influence of the advanced civilization on their way of life, language, religion, tribal culture and customs, political maturisation, etc. It also deals with other races and tribes such as Tok, Karens, Lawa, Kachins, etc. who helped in their ethnic evolution.
