Tibeto-Himalayan Languages of Uttarakhand” is the third volume of the Series ‘Studies in Tibeto-Himalayan Languages’. This volume like the volume II consists of two parts, of which the present volume is the part one. It has been devoted to the Tibetan-Himalayan languages of the Rang as group spoken by the people of Rang tribe (Popularly termed as Bhatia’s) of the District Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. These languages due to valuable preservations of various elements of Aryan and non-Aryan languages of ancient India have a special significance for the linguistic and cultural history of this region, besides their relevance to the whole Himalayan regions of India, Nepal and Bhutan. As such the linguistic of great interest to the students of this linguistic discipline but also to all those who are interested in the history and culture of the tribal people of this North-Eastern border land of India in Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, it is for the first time that a detailed descriptive analysis of these little known Tibeto-Himalayan dialects is being presented in this volume. The dialects which have been included in this volume are Darmiya, Chaudangsi-Byangsi and Johari or Rang as. It is hoped that with the publication of this and other volumes of the above-mentioned series, the long-felt necessity of a detailed linguistic survey of the Himalayas will be fulfilled and scholars of linguistics all over the world will have an easy access to various unknown and little known aspects of these languages.
