Keeping in view the utility of traditional medicinal plants in drug development on modern prameters, the present work on prioritization and identification of medicinal plants was undertaken. The plants were selected on the basis of their reported usefulness in the indigenious systems of medicines viz. Ayurveda, siddha, Unani and Homeopathy, as well as in folk or tribal medicines. Other reported activities/actions for the treatment of various diseases were also the criteria, such as - control of infectious diseases, including malaria/filaria, tuberculosis, kala azar, hepatitis, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, depression, antheroscerosis, cancer, memory degeneration, allergies, respiratory disorders, immunomodulators, gastric ulcers, diuretic action on CNS, menses regulation, GIT dysfunctions, antiworm, antiurolithiasis, oesteoporosis, psoriasis, insufficient lactation and Parkinsonism. Under the project, over 500 plants have been identified. Although a number of publications are available on the botanical, pharmacognosy, ethnobiology, chemistry, biological actions/activities, aspects of the drugs, it was considered worthwhile to compile the information together. |
