DESCRIPTION
Cedrus deodara (deodar), also known as Himalayan of Indian cedar is the most important among the Indian conifers. It attains huge dimensions and lives to a great age. It is typically gregarious and found on all important geological formations. Deodar wood is soft to moderately hard. It is strongest coniferous wood and weight for weight, about as strong as teak. It is very east timber to saw and work to a smooth finish. The oleo-resin from deodar is valued as a cure for skin diseases. On steam distillation the wood yields a reddish brown oil with a characteristic balsamic odour. The fragrant fresh needles yield a yellow oil on steam distillation. The present monograph deals with morphology, anatomy, silviculture and management, insect pests and diseases, growth statistics and trade, wood properties and utilization.
