The drug menace has most negatively overwhelmed the world. By all possible indications the situation in India too is certainly alarming. As such framing of a multipronged strategy to combat the problem of drug abuse, before it assumes the form of an epidemic, can hardly be overemphasized. Understanding the overall situation in a holistic manner is the first step in this direction.
The present study which is an integral part of a nation-wide survey sponsored by the Ministry of Welfare, Government of India, pertains to the City of Ajmer in Rajasthan and its suburb town Pushkar, and examines the overall scenario of drug addiction in its various ramifications. It provides an empirical account of nature, frequency and magnitude of drug abuse and associated socio-cultural and structural factors. It also provides a detailed analysis of consequences and impact of drug abuse and its relation to criminality.
Most importantly, the possibilities of withdrawal from drugs and the control measures including effectiveness of drug prevention laws have also been highlighted. The book is a valuable source material not only for sociologists and social work scholars but also the NGOs working in the field. |
