The monograph is a first-ever attempt at reconstructing on paper the monastery of Tho.ling, the most important religious site of West Tibet. Part 1 assesses the history of Tho.ling from its foundation in 996 by the monk-king Ye shes'od and the translator Rin chen bzang po, up to the 19th century. Part 2 uses hitherto unknown documents belonging to Tho.ling to identify all its temples, chapels, stupas and other buildings composing the monatic complex. An extensive study of the history and site of the Tho.Ling monastery in Guge, Western Tibet.
