The Purana have obtained the name of Pancalaksana because their contents generally embrace five topics namely, Sarga (creation of the universe), Pratisarga (recreation after dissolution), Vamsas (genealogy), Manvantara (the epoch) and vamsanucaritam (history of dynasties, both solar as well as the lunar, who ruled during ancient time). In the above background of the Purana and their composition it may be stated the Brahmavaivarta mainly deals with the life of Lord Krsna beside, the deities like Ganesa, Nature and the globe. Thus It is divided into four khandas known asĀ² (i) Brahma Khanda (ii) Prakrti Khanda (iii) Ganapati Khanda, and (iv) Krsna Janma Khanda. There are thirty Chapters in the Brahmakhanda; which deal with the creation of the universe, earth, mountains, oceans, islands, Patala and heavens besides the other creatures, in addition to the creation of Vedas by Savitri at the instance of Brahma. In the Prakrti Khanda, there are sixty seven chapters, which deal with the goddess of Nature in the form of Pancadevi. Thereafter the emergence of Sri Krsna and Radha is mentioned. Besides, the details about goddess Tulasi, fourteen Manus etc. The Ganapati Khanda is extended over to forty six chapters, where Narada asks Narayana to highlight the life story of Ganesa. Krsna-janam-khanda, which elaborately describes the birth and life of Krsna. Infact the main aim of the Brahmavaivarta Purana happens to be to enlighten the people about the birth and the exploits of lord Krsna. At the time of the creation, lord Krsna appeared over the earth in the forms of Prakrti and Purusa whose left half was Prakrti and the right half was Purusa. The same Mula-Prakrti was known as Radha. The Goloka is maintained with the prowess or Yogic powers of lord Krsna. |
