Without Baggage is a first-hand account of the military operations in Jammu and Kashmir in 1948. While there are several books by experts that judge the historic events, this book provides a detailed factual analysis by an insider.
The author, Lt. Gen E.A. Vas, wrote this book as a young Major in 1949. Though he fought with the Jammu division, later named 26 division, the book provides an extensive overview of operations in other sectors. It is a fine example of the extent to which theory translates into practice and sudden instances in war when instinct and mettle prove their worth.
Daring criticism, the author has not withheld his personal assessments and experience of the events. On the contrary, he has made them well known at each juncture in the book so as to benefit young officers when faced with similar challenges. |
