Today, not even a backyard is spared from the intrusion of Westernization, modernization and globalization. But the cost to a culture in a tiny land-locked country like Nepal, where cultural identity and diversity has survived for ages, is becoming increasingly unbearable. Degrading family values, deteriorating moral capital, changing work and wealth ethic, crumbling heritage sites, disappearing interests in festivals, rituals and customs, exodus of youths abroad, weakening social hierarchy, linguistic distortions, passion for consumer goods and emergence of economic extremities have geared shifts in the Nepalese culture. People are experiencing "culture shock" from within. The social, political, economic and cultural upheaval is becoming increasingly difficult to cope with. New values systems, beliefs, and attitudes are emerging. With new crises of identity and emerging politics of nationalism and ethnicity, the Nepalese people are reinventing their own culture. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the Nepalese culture cannot be simply defined by traditional reference points and landmarks. While the traditional dynamism such as Sanskritization and Indianization of the culture has not abated, it is becoming increasingly important to interpret the dynamism of the Nepalese culture in the context of Westernization, globalization and modernization. |
